Radiology price lists in NZ: who publishes prices, and how to get a quote

Short answer: Pacific Radiology does not publish a price list. Its only published prices are for an immigration chest X-ray. We checked the websites of 13 New Zealand radiology groups on 14 October 2026, including Beyond, Canopy (formerly TRG) and I-MED (now including Hamilton Radiology). None of them publishes a list of private scan prices. Some other clinics do, and of the eight we checked, only River Radiology in Hamilton lists MRI. Everywhere else, send your referral and ask for the total before you book. First, check whether you need to pay at all.

Is there a Pacific Radiology price list?

No. We went through Pacific Radiology’s website page by page on 14 October 2026. The only prices on it are for an immigration chest X-ray: $205 for New Zealand immigration, and $215 for Australia or Canada. Its own disclaimer adds that the costs shown on its website are estimates only and may change when you book.

So if you searched for Pacific’s MRI, CT or ultrasound prices, there is no list to find. To get the number, ring the branch, or the regional number on Pacific’s payments page (Canterbury, Nelson, Otago and Southland, Waikato, and Wellington and Manawatū), and ask for the total for your referral. Have the referral in front of you. Pacific asks you to pay on the day of your scan.

Our directory has Pacific’s branches by city, with a filter for the scan you need: Christchurch, Wellington, Dunedin, Hamilton, Nelson and Queenstown. One useful detail: Pacific accepts self-referral for bone density (DEXA) screening and screening breast imaging, so you can ring about those without a doctor’s letter. A breast lump or other symptom should still go through your GP.

What each radiology group publishes

Here is what each group’s own website showed on 14 October 2026. None of the 13 has a price list for MRI, CT, ultrasound or X-ray. What they do publish is a few fixed items: immigration X-rays, pregnancy-scan co-payments, ACC part-charges and one calcium score.

Group Prices it publishes How to get your price
Pacific Radiology Immigration chest X-ray only: $205 for New Zealand, $215 for Australia or Canada. Ring the branch or the regional number on its payments page.
Bay Radiology The same immigration X-ray prices, nothing else. No quote process on its pages. Ask the branch.
Auckland Radiology Group The same immigration X-ray prices, nothing else. Email a quote request (the address is on its clinics page).
Beyond Radiology No prices. Its booking coordinators tell you the costs before the scan, and it gives estimates for any examination.
Canopy Imaging (formerly TRG Imaging) No scan prices. Its team can give an estimate before your appointment.
I-MED Radiology NZ (now including Hamilton Radiology and Midland MRI) No prices. All prices by phone or email (number below).
Allevia Radiology ACC part-charges (X-ray $50, ultrasound $80). No private scan prices. Private MRI, CT or PET-CT: send a copy of your referral for an estimate.
Astra Radiology Pregnancy-scan co-payment only: $30 with a Community Services Card, $90 without. Ask the booking team.
SRG Radiology No prices. Phone to ask about part-charges on ACC X-rays and ultrasounds. No surcharge on an ACC CT.
Horizon Radiology Immigration X-ray $165. Pregnancy scans free with a Community Services Card; otherwise the surcharge is capped at $90. ACC surcharges: ask the branch.
Reform Radiology ACC part-charges ($30 X-ray, $60 ultrasound) and a $590 CT calcium score. Estimates for any examination.
Affinity Medical Imaging ACC part-charge on X-ray and ultrasound: $45. An estimate when you book.
Absolute Radiology, New Plymouth No scan prices. A quote in advance.

Each group name opens its page in our directory, which lists its branches by city (Absolute Radiology’s opens its listing). Checked 14 October 2026 on each group’s own website; prices change.

Infographic: who publishes radiology prices in NZ. Left, eight example clinics that publish scan prices, such as River Radiology (MRI, CT, ultrasound and X-ray) and Auckland X-ray Services. Right, 13 radiology groups with no scan price list, some of which publish fixed items such as the immigration chest X-ray at Pacific, Bay and Auckland Radiology Group

Which clinics publish their prices?

Here are eight clinics that put their scan prices online. They are examples we checked, not a complete list. Six of the eight list scan prices only for X-ray, ultrasound or both. River Radiology is the only one with MRI on its list.

Clinic Scans priced Example from its list
River Radiology, Hamilton and Cambridge MRI, CT, ultrasound, X-ray Knee MRI $1,372.00. ACC high-tech MRI and CT are listed at $0.
Auckland X-ray Services, Mt Eden CT, ultrasound, X-ray (no MRI) CT brain or head $679.
Marlborough Medical Imaging, Blenheim Ultrasound, X-ray Knee X-ray $144.
North Canterbury X-ray, Rangiora X-ray Knee joint $175.00.
Coastal Radiology, Gisborne Ultrasound (no private X-ray price) Abdomen ultrasound $300.
Connect Radiology, Auckland X-ray General X-ray $95 for the first image if you are not enrolled at a White Cross or Local Doctors clinic, plus $30 for each extra image.
Lux Radiology, Auckland Ultrasound (private X-ray: ask reception) Upper abdomen ultrasound $435.
Wellington Imaging, Wellington X-ray Private X-ray from $150.

One example per clinic, with the clinic’s own label, read 14 October 2026. Auckland X-ray Services dates its list “current at September 2026” and Marlborough Medical Imaging dates its fees 18 May 2026. Coastal’s page showed that day’s date; the other five carry no date.

Read the small print on each list. River says all its prices are estimates only and may change, and gives Gold Card and Community Services Card holders 10 percent off. Auckland X-ray Services calls its prices indicative until its team confirms them. Coastal calls its list an indication only. A published price is a good starting point, not a promise.

For a fuller spread of prices by scan, our cost guides compare the published lists side by side: MRI, CT, ultrasound and X-ray. Dental X-rays and cone-beam CT, mostly priced by dental and oral surgery practices, are in our dental X-ray guide.

Why a price list is rare

As a radiologist, I don’t think this is mostly about hiding prices. A private scan’s price follows exactly what is done, and the clinic only knows that once it reads your referral. “MRI of the knee” is one thing. “MRI of the lumbar spine and pelvis with contrast” is another.

The lists that do exist show it. River prices an additional CT region at $509.50. Auckland X-ray Services charges $124 for a contrast injection. Connect charges $30 for each extra X-ray image. Absolute Radiology warns that a scan may cost more or less than the quote if additional scans or contrast are needed.

Clinics also set their own prices. A CT of the head is $690.00 at River Radiology and $679 at Auckland X-ray Services. A knee X-ray is $144 in Blenheim, $149.50 at River, $155 at Auckland X-ray Services and $175.00 in Rangiora.

So a quote based on your referral is more useful than a list, provided you ask the right questions.

Do you need to pay at all?

Before you chase a private price, check which of four routes your scan is on. A private price matters most on the last one.

If you have health insurance: some groups say they will seek Southern Cross pre-approval for you. Beyond does this for most of its services, and tells you any shortfall or excess before your appointment. Auckland X-ray Services says it bills Southern Cross directly and tells you what you pay before you come. SRG applies for pre-approval for MRI and CT. Canopy, I-MED, Astra (for CT, PET-CT, MRI and mammography), Reform and Lux say they are Southern Cross affiliated (Canopy, I-MED, Astra, Reform, Lux). Cover still depends on your policy, so Pacific suggests checking with your insurer as well.

How to get a firm price

Start on the group’s page in our directory, pick the branch nearest you that does your scan, and ring it with your referral. The provider pages for Pacific, Beyond, Canopy, I-MED and River each let you filter branches by scan type and city. Eight of the 13 groups describe a way to get a price for any scan: Beyond, Canopy, Reform, Affinity and Absolute offer a cost estimate or quote; Allevia asks for a copy of your referral; Auckland Radiology Group has an email for quotes; and I-MED gives prices by phone or email.

Three questions that make a quote worth having

✓  “For the exact scan on this referral, what is the total, including contrast or any extra region?”

✓  “Will this be billed to ACC, the community radiology programme, my insurer, or me?”

✓  “What do I pay on the day: a part-charge, an excess, or the full amount?”

I would want these three answers before any private scan. The first stops a cheap headline price turning into a dearer bill. The second catches a scan you should not be paying for. The third matters because Pacific, Bay and Auckland Radiology Group all ask for payment on the day.
