When can a CT scan be free?

A referral to a private clinic does not, by itself, establish free access. The same CT examination can sit under different payment arrangements. I would settle that question before choosing an appointment.

Payment follows the route arranged for your scan: through the public or private route, the community programme or ACC.

ACC’s high-tech imaging rules specify accepted referral pathways and approval requirements for injury-related CT. Have your claim number ready. Ask the clinic whether it will provide this CT under its ACC imaging contract and whether approval is needed before booking.

How does funded community CT work?

GPs, urgent-care doctors and nurse practitioners can request listed X-rays, CT scans and diagnostic ultrasound through the community programme. Each request must fit the national criteria. Some CT criteria require specialist or radiologist input.

For example, the CT abdomen and pelvis criteria include suspected underlying cancer when a secondary care specialist, primary care radiology liaison or radiologist recommends the examination. A GP referral and a specialist recommendation can therefore be parts of the same request.

The criteria are national, while delivery is organised locally. Health NZ still describes full rollout from July 2026 as projected.

What should a private CT quote include?

A useful quote answers a specific request. Give each clinic the same referral and ask what the total patient charge includes. Keep the quoted examination description with the price so you can compare the same service.

Ask your insurer: “What would I pay for this scan, and do I need approval first?” Send the quote with that question and keep the written answer.

Can I get help with travel?

National Travel Assistance has specific eligibility rules. It requires the relevant publicly funded specialist-to-specialist referral, plus a qualifying travel criterion. Travel for a self-pay CT or a GP-requested community CT alone does not qualify. More than 350 km one way is one qualifying distance for an adult who meets the specialist referral requirements. Other rules cover repeated visits, children and Community Services Card holders.

A referral requests the scan; booking sets the appointment. Public services usually send appointment details by letter or phone. If nothing arrives, contact your referrer to check the request.
