What is an ultrasound?

Referral
Most ultrasound scans need a referral from a GP, midwife, specialist or physiotherapist. Some private clinics accept self-referral for certain scans; check before you book.
Time and preparation
Most scans take 15 to 45 minutes. Some scans need a full bladder or fasting; the clinic will tell you how to prepare.
Who pays
