Free screening mammograms are provided through BreastScreen Aotearoa for eligible women in the programme age range; enrol through Time to Screen. A breast lump or change needs a doctor referral for a diagnostic mammogram, usually with an ultrasound.
Time and preparation
A mammogram appointment usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Avoid deodorant or talc on the day because it can show on the images.
Who pays
Screening through BreastScreen Aotearoa is free for eligible women. Diagnostic mammograms are publicly funded when referred through a public pathway, or paid privately or by insurance.
