What is an X-ray?
An X-ray uses a small dose of radiation to take pictures of bones, joints, the chest and the abdomen. It is the quickest and most common imaging test and is often used first after an injury. Health New Zealand: X-rays
Referral
X-rays need a referral from a doctor, nurse practitioner, physiotherapist or other registered referrer. Many community clinics see referred patients without an appointment.
Time and preparation
An X-ray usually takes 5 to 15 minutes. You may be asked to remove jewellery or clothing with metal over the area being examined.
Who pays
X-rays are commonly ACC-funded after an injury or publicly funded when referred through a public pathway. Private clinics charge a fee for other referrals.
