What is a PET-CT?
A PET-CT scan combines a CT scan with a small injected radioactive tracer that shows how active cells are. It is mainly used to stage and monitor cancer, and sometimes for heart or brain conditions. Health New Zealand: PET-CT scan

PET-CT is requested by a specialist, usually an oncologist or cancer team. It is available at a small number of centres, so patients may travel.
Time and preparation
Allow 2 to 3 hours. The tracer needs about an hour to spread through the body before the scan, and the scan itself takes about 20 to 30 minutes. You usually fast beforehand.
Who pays
PET-CT is publicly funded for specific cancer indications set by Health New Zealand. Other scans may be paid by insurance or self-funded.
