What is a pregnancy ultrasound?
Pregnancy ultrasound uses sound waves to check the baby, placenta and womb. The usual scans are a dating scan, the 12-week nuchal translucency scan that forms part of screening, and the 20-week anatomy scan. Growth scans may be added later if needed. Referral
Your lead maternity carer, usually a midwife or GP, arranges pregnancy scans. Scans that are part of the national screening programme are free for eligible women. Extra reassurance or 3D scans are private.
Time and preparation
Most pregnancy scans take 20 to 40 minutes. Early scans may need a full bladder; the clinic will tell you how to prepare.
Who pays
Screening scans are free through your lead maternity carer for eligible women. Additional private scans are self-paid.
