What is a CT?

Referral
CT scans need a referral from a doctor or specialist. Public hospitals provide CT for referred and emergency patients. Private clinics accept referrals for insured or self-paid scans.
Time and preparation
The scan itself usually takes 5 to 15 minutes. Allow 30 to 60 minutes if contrast dye is used, and tell the clinic about kidney problems, diabetes medicines or previous contrast reactions.
Who pays
CT is publicly funded when clinically required, may be covered by ACC for injuries, and can be paid by insurance or self-funded privately.
