What is an ultrasound?
An ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to make pictures of organs, soft tissue, blood vessels and an unborn baby. It does not use radiation and is done by a sonographer with a hand-held probe. Health New Zealand: Ultrasound scans
Referral
Most ultrasound scans need a referral from a GP, midwife, specialist or physiotherapist. Some private clinics accept self-referral for certain scans; check before you book.
Time and preparation

Who pays
