What is an MRI?
An MRI scan uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves, not X-rays, to make detailed pictures of organs, joints, the brain and spine. It is often used for joint injuries, back and neck problems, and brain and spinal conditions. Health New Zealand: MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
Referral
In New Zealand an MRI is arranged through a referral from a doctor, specialist or, for many injuries, a physiotherapist under ACC. Public MRI is prioritised by clinical need. Private clinics accept referrals for self-paid or insured scans.
Time and preparation
Most MRI scans take 20 to 60 minutes. You lie still inside the scanner, which is noisy, and you must remove metal objects. Tell the clinic about any implants, pacemakers or metal fragments before you book.
Who pays
MRI may be publicly funded when a specialist requests it, covered by ACC after an accepted injury claim, paid by health insurance, or self-paid at a private clinic.
